NCCB’s Story
Born in the 1990's, North Central Coast Bodyboards have a proud history in providing an avenue for bodyboards to excel and for people from all walks of life to celebrate their shared love of the ocean.
Bodyboarding has always been strong on The Central Coast and particularly on The Northern End. Around the end of the 80s, North Central Coast Bodyboarders was set up by guys like Jeremy Harris and a few of his crew. I don't know too much about that chapter of the club but I heard it wound down in early 90s. Then in 1995 Col Wall and guys like Shane Plumb got NCCB running again. This is when the sport was booming. I was a member from 1996 to 2001. Comps were held at Lakes, North Entrance, Budgewoi stretch, Pelos and we even had some comps at my local North Shelly.
Comp days were long. With around 80 competitors meaning the days went from sunrise to near sunset. Great people were involved running the club at this time. They included Chris Barnes , Troy Martin, The Barron Family, Jarrod Gibson and many more
The club had some really good results at Port Teams Challenge and produced many State and National Champions including Grant Molony , Lilly Pollard , Shaun Petersen , Brad Jackson , Gavin Douglas , Mat Klimowicz , Adam Debono, Allan Ives, Greg Arnold (even though he was a blow in from Avoca lol) and a heap others.
We all had a blast during this time. We would surf together, compete together and party together and boy could some of this crew party. A story about one club member who I won't name (but his initials are SP, he now lives in Cronulla). Well on one comp day I was driving to Lakes from Tumbi Umbi. I spotted this member hitching with his board under one arm and fins in other and his long, frizzy blond hair blowing in the wind. He had pulled an all nighter at a party so I happily gave him a lift. On arrival at Lakes I realised I so happened to have SP in my first heat. It was only a three man heat as the other rider was a no show. SP, still showing signs of intoxication paddles straight out. Busts a couple of backflips, wins heat and knocks me out. I never should have given him a lift.....He then went had a few hours sleep in the sand dunes and went on to win the event.
